EASY ON THE TINI APPLETINI

and other “dark ages” cocktails

Throughout this book I make references to the “dark ages” of cocktails, generally defined by overly sweet drinks with artificial flavors and bright colors that served purely as fuel to a fun night. Nothing wrong with that, and I firmly believe cocktails should be fun and not taken so seriously. However, the period stretching from roughly the 1960s through the 1990s in America was a distinctly different cocktail era than the craft cocktail revival that followed.

The appletini came about during the 1990s in the death throes of these “dark ages” and began as a simple combination of radioactive neon-green sour apple schnapps and vodka in a martini glass. This drink had just enough time to hit mainstream when the TV show Scrubs aired in 2001. Zach Braff plays a young attending physician named J.D. who has a penchant for appletinis that are “easy on the tini.” When ordering these at the bar, a public shaming at his “girly” choice of drink is sure to follow, but that never stops J.D.

I like the underlying message here: Drink what you like. Sweet drinks aren’t feminine, spirit-forward drinks are not inherently masculine. Anyone who argues otherwise is likely battling some insecurities, so be like J.D. and even get sugar on the rim if you want.

So here is my interpretation of J.D.’s preferred appletini, with “easy on the tini” meaning heavier on the apple flavor. If you’re into green apple Jolly Ranchers, this is the drink for you.
